Fun with Mom

Daughter and Mom having funIn terms of celebrating Mother’s Day, there are as many ways to observe as there are mothers in the world! While there are a number of standard traditions to choose from, unique gifts that suit your mom, grandmother, wife, or “mother figure” are often the best way to go. Typically, the holiday is observed in the morning and early afternoon, but celebrations could easily extend into the latter part of the day. There are many things you could do to celebrate-the process of choosing what and how is often difficult!

A few ideas: Cook a meal for her. While many families go to a restaurant for breakfast or brunch, a homemade breakfast in bed is a thoughtful gesture. If Mom loves eggs but rarely has the time to prepare them in the morning, serve her an omelet! If store-bought orange juice is a part of her daily routine, try fresh-squeezing some for her. If you decide to take your mother, wife, or grandmother out to breakfast, consider preparing a Mother’s Day dinner for her at home. Even if you’re not the expert chef, your attempts will almost certainly be appreciated!

Make a card. Companies like Hallmark capitalize on our attempts to honor Mom, but your handiwork will always mean more than a purchased card. Again, even if you don’t consider yourself an artistic expert, your efforts will mean a lot to Mom. Take the time to write down your feelings and to thank her for the small things she does everyday. Sentiments like “Mom, thanks for your advice on the phone last week” or “thank you for packing my lunch” are heartfelt and sincere. If mom is a less conventional type, feel free to get creative! Write her message on a cake or knit script into a scarf.

Take a day trip. While few people have the time or money to take vacations in honor of Mother’s Day, a short trip can be just as fun. Take Mom to her favorite park, museum, or coffee shop. She will appreciate the time you spend with her, and by visiting her favorite place, you’ll definitely create memories together!

These are some basic suggestions-the more creative you are, the more Mother’s Day will mean to you (and to your mom!).
