The History of Mother’s Day

Did you ever wonder why we celebrate mothers and why we picked a certain day to do it? The concept is actually a modern one, and it’s a counterpart of Father’s Day.

It’s believed that the ancient Greeks had a concept of honoring mothers, and that has carried over into the modern times. The day was made an official holiday by President Woodrow Wilson and has been celebrated ever since. There is no proof, though, that the Greeks were the ones who started the idea of celebrating mothers. There are different opinions of the origin and creation of the day, making it popular in many countries but often on different days.

Even if it can’t be completely determined where Mother’s Day came from, it’s certain that it will continue to be celebrated well into the future. Mothers everywhere can enjoy the gifts and the outpouring of love that they receive during that special time when they are honored for all that they do.

Mother’s Day Traditions Around the World

Depending on where you are in the world, the concept of Mother’s Day can be very different from what other people celebrate in other areas.

In Japan, for example, the holiday is marketed very heavily just like it is in the US. Flowers are the typical gift. The holiday is unofficial in China but is seeing a rise in popularity, with more and more people showing an interest in celebrating.

Countries like Iran also celebrate it, although the holiday was recently moved after the Iranian revolution.

In the UK and Ireland the holiday came about based on the old Christian tradition of visiting your mother church once every year. Since a lot of people did that around Easter, the holiday appeared during that time.

No matter where you live or what traditions you associate with Mother’s Day, there’s no doubt that mothers are very important to society in virtually all cultures because they run households, hold down jobs, and raise children, sometimes on their own. They’re important in a lot of ways, no matter where they live.

Mother’s Day Poetry – You Can Do it!

Write a poem (or note), one that you feel reflects your love and appreciation for everything mom has done. Write it yourself if you can (you’ll get big time mommy points just for the effort).
